This policy explains what information PlaguePrimer collects, why, who else handles it, and the choices you have. It covers this website and email sent to our contact address. The site is run by the PlaguePrimer team.

The short version

  • You can read every page without an account. There are no sign-ups, forms, comments, newsletters or ads.
  • We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand which pages people read and where pages are hard to use.
  • In the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are off unless you turn them on. Elsewhere they are on unless you turn them off. You can change this at any time under Cookie settings in the footer.
  • If you email us, we use your message only to answer it or fix the site.
  • We don't sell personal information or use it for advertising.

What we collect and why

When you visit the site

Hosting and security. The site is served through Cloudflare. Like any web server, Cloudflare receives technical information with each request, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. It uses this to deliver pages and to protect the site from abuse and attacks. Cloudflare's own privacy policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Google Analytics. Google Analytics 4 tells us which pages are read, how visitors arrive (for example from a search engine or a link), roughly where they are (country and city), and what device and browser they use. Google says Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. It keeps event-level data for at most 14 months, the longest period it offers. How Google uses data from sites like ours is explained at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Microsoft Clarity. Clarity records how pages are used, such as clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, and builds heatmaps and replays of visits. We use it to find pages that are confusing or broken. Clarity masks text that might be sensitive by default, and the site has no forms for you to type into. Microsoft keeps recordings for 30 days and aggregated data, such as heatmaps, for up to 9 months. Microsoft's privacy statement is at privacy.microsoft.com.

Fonts and images are served from our own site, so loading them does not send your information to another company.

When you email us

If you write to support@plagueprimer.com, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. Cloudflare Email Routing forwards the message to the mailbox we read it in. We use it only to deal with what you wrote about, such as correcting a page. We keep it for up to 12 months after we have dealt with it, then delete it, unless we need it longer to handle a legal claim.

Analytics choices by region

We use Google's consent mode and Clarity's consent settings, so what happens depends on where you are and what you choose.

  • EEA, UK and Switzerland: off by default. Until you turn analytics on, Google Analytics and Clarity don't set cookies. Google Analytics sends only basic signals without cookies, such as that a page was viewed, which Google uses in aggregate. Clarity can't link your page views to each other.
  • Everywhere else: on by default. Google Analytics and Clarity set the cookies listed in our cookie policy.
  • Your choice wins. Use Cookie settings in the footer to turn analytics on or off. Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage, and you can change it at any time.

Our cookie policy lists every cookie, who sets it and how long it lasts.

Who receives information

We share information only with the companies that run parts of the site for us:

  • Cloudflare for hosting, security and email forwarding.
  • Google for Google Analytics.
  • Microsoft for Clarity.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We don't sell personal information or share it for advertising.

International transfers

These companies process data in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws from yours. They state that they use recognized safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for such transfers.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and California law, you may have the right to:

  • see the personal information we hold about you;
  • have it corrected or deleted;
  • object to or restrict how we use it;
  • withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what was done before;
  • complain to your local data protection authority.

For analytics, the quickest route is Cookie settings in the footer, or clearing the cookies in your browser. Analytics data is not linked to your name or email address, so we usually can't find a particular visitor's data in it. For anything else, write to support@plagueprimer.com. We may ask for information to confirm a request is yours.

Children

The site is written for a general adult audience and is not directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has sent us information, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also note it on this page.
